In line with our commitment to Community Social Responsibility (CSR), Nakuru College of Health Sciences & Management successfully conducted a two-day community outreach program comprising a health awareness talk at Mercy Njeri Secondary School and an extensive community cleanup exercise around the Chief’s Office, Mercy Njeri Centre, and the surrounding neighborhood.
The initiative brought together our management, staff, students, community leaders, and partners with one common goal—to promote healthy living, environmental conservation, and positive social change.

Inspiring Young Minds Through Health Education
The first day began with a courtesy visit to Mercy Njeri Secondary School, where our Executive Director, Madam Susan Nyamai, and the TVET Principal, Mr. Augustine Njeri, were warmly received by the School Principal. Following a brief orientation in the Principal’s office, the health awareness program officially commenced.
The session was facilitated by our dedicated team of tutors representing different academic departments:
- Madam Magdalene – Head of Department Community Health
- Mr. Jacob – Tutor Perioperative Theatre Technology
- Mr. Leaky – Tutor Bio-Medical Engineering
- Mr. Peter – Skills Lab Coordinator
- Mr. Kevin – Head of the Nursing Department

The speakers engaged students on critical health and social issues affecting young people today, including:
- Mental Health
- Drugs and Substance Abuse
- Menstrual Hygiene
Each presenter brought valuable insights, practical advice, and real-life experiences that resonated with the students. The interactive Question and Answer session was particularly inspiring, with students enthusiastically participating, asking thoughtful questions, and demonstrating a genuine desire to learn.
The discussions emphasized the importance of making informed decisions, prioritizing mental wellness, maintaining personal hygiene, and avoiding harmful substances that can negatively impact one’s future.

Supporting Students Beyond the Classroom
As part of the outreach, Nakuru College also donated sanitary pads to girls and socks to boys, helping support students’ health, dignity, and well-being.
These donations were made possible through the generosity of Nakuru College of Health Sciences & Management, together with our friends and partners, including Mr. Akili and Sharif Jewelers, Sacramento, California.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation for their kindness and unwavering support. Their contribution made a meaningful difference in the lives of many students and demonstrated the power of collaboration in uplifting our communities.

Showcasing Career Opportunities
Beyond the health awareness sessions, we also took the opportunity to introduce students to the wide range of academic programs and career opportunities available at Nakuru College of Health Sciences & Management.
Our team showcased various health science, technology, business, and social science courses offered at the college, while highlighting the exciting career pathways each program opens up. Students were particularly interested in learning about entry requirements, course duration, professional licensing, employment opportunities, and further education prospects.
The session sparked tremendous interest, with many students actively asking questions and seeking guidance on choosing careers that align with their passions and strengths. The enthusiasm and curiosity displayed by the learners clearly demonstrated the growing need for structured career guidance among secondary school students.

The interaction reaffirmed our belief that career mentorship is just as important as academic instruction. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with Mercy Njeri Secondary School and other institutions by conducting more career talks, mentorship sessions, and educational outreach programs that empower young people to make informed decisions about their futures.
For many students, this was more than just an introduction to our courses—it was an opportunity to discover possibilities, broaden their horizons, and begin envisioning successful careers in healthcare, technology, business, and other professional fields.

Cleaning Our Community, One Step at a Time
While the health talk was taking place at the school, another team comprising students and staff embarked on a cleanup exercise at the Chief’s Office.
Armed with protective gear, gloves, slashers, rakes, and other cleaning equipment, the team carried out various environmental conservation activities, including:
- Bush clearing
- Landscaping
- Trimming overgrown tree branches
- Collecting leaves and twigs
- General compound cleaning
Their hard work transformed the area into a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming environment for both staff and community members.

Joining Forces at Mercy Njeri Centre
The day’s activities were carefully coordinated to allow both teams to converge at Mercy Njeri Centre for a larger community cleanup exercise. Rather than simply travelling to the venue, the team turned the journey itself into an opportunity to serve the community by collecting litter along the roadside and highway leading to the centre.
Upon arriving at Mercy Njeri Centre, both groups joined hands and intensified the cleanup efforts. Our students demonstrated remarkable commitment and teamwork as they collected large amounts of waste, including plastic bottles, papers, and other litter that had accumulated within the market area and clogged roadside drainage channels.

The cleanup restored cleanliness to public spaces while also creating awareness about proper waste disposal and environmental responsibility.
Despite the demanding nature of the work, our students and staff approached every task with enthusiasm and determination. Although equipped with protective gear, they were never afraid to get their hands dirty in pursuit of a cleaner and healthier community. Their willingness to serve reflected the true spirit of compassion, humility, and leadership that Nakuru College seeks to instill in every student.
The exercise concluded at approximately 3:00 p.m., after which all participants gathered at the school grounds for lunch and fellowship, celebrating a successful day of service

Day Two: Extending the Impact
The momentum continued on the second day as students and staff returned for another cleanup exercise, this time focusing on the railway corridor and the main road leading to the college.
Once again, there was an impressive turnout of volunteers who willingly dedicated their time and energy to ensuring that not only the community but also the areas surrounding our institution remained clean and attractive.
The exercise reinforced the message that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility and that small collective actions can create lasting positive change.

Looking Ahead
This outreach marks the beginning of many more Community Social Responsibility initiatives that Nakuru College of Health Sciences & Management intends to undertake.
As an institution, we believe education extends beyond classrooms. We are committed to producing graduates who are not only academically competent but also socially responsible, compassionate, and actively involved in transforming their communities.
We sincerely thank every student, staff member, community leader, volunteer, and partner who contributed to the success of this initiative. Your dedication, generosity, and teamwork made this program truly impactful.
Together, we are building healthier communities, cleaner environments, and a brighter future for generations to come.
